To help organizations reduce innovation-related risks and costs, establish innovation best practices, and identify those individuals who have demonstrated their ability to consistently deliver valuable real-life results, the Institute of Professional Innovators has created the first in the world history Innovation Certification Program. It is based on the General Theory of Innovation (GTI), a unique and powerful scientific theory that transforms the capricious art of innovation into a step-by-step process with a highly predictable and consistently successful outcome.
The Certification Program, the content of which is solely determined by the IPI's Certification Board, has three levels: Innovation Green Belt™, Innovation Black Belt™ and Innovation Master Black Belt™.
Recently, IPI introduced the Innovation Gold Belt™ certification level for those executives and managers who want to master the Strategic Innovation application only. Please contact us if you have an interest in this certification level.
Generic Requirements for Getting Certified
Individuals seeking any level of the certification must meet the following three criteria.
- Membership in IPI. An applicant must be an IPI member in good standing.
- Completion of a number of required courses. Course requirements vary depending on the level of certification an applicant wishes to achieve. To be qualified for the IPI Certification, courses must be taken from a qualified IPI certified Innovation Black Belt™ (or Innovation Master Black Belt™). A complete list of Authorized Certification Providers can be found here.
- Successful demonstration of one's ability to apply the acquired knowledge to the real-life projects. The projects' specific objectives vary and are predetermined by the respective level of certification an applicant seeks. Success of a project must be verified by BOTH an IPI's Certified Innovation Black Belt™ (or Innovation Master Black Belt™) supervising the applicant (this certifies the projects quality) AND by the management of a client-organization that benefited as a result of the applicant's activities in the form of a letter confirming practical value of the project results.
Requirements for Automatic Recertification
Once an IPI Certification is obtained, it will be automatically renewed on an annual basis for those Certified Innovators who are qualified. Qualification for automatic recertification includes meeting the following requirements.
- Being an IPI’s member in good standing, requirements for which are presented at the Membership Benefits page.
- Maintaining and expanding one’s professional knowledge, which requires:
- taking any new courses that are required for the certification, the need for which is determined by the IPI Certification Board;
- conducting at least one project annually that involves use of innovation-related tools;
- writing of an innovation-related article once a year, to be posted on the IPI website.

The certification fee, which has to be paid in its entirety during the certification registration process, always includes.
