Complex Problem Solving

Situation Description

Since every challenge can be described as a problem, we would like to position this application as a system performance-related situation, which manifests itself as a system’s inability to achieve a desired result/outcome, or creation of a new negative “side-effect” that is caused by the system intended performance or by an attempt to change the system in order to fix an outstanding challenge.

GTI Approach

GTI recognizes that the situation that contains an initially stated dissatisfaction is in reality a system of many inter-related and inter-connected problems. That said, however, all problems are NOT born equal, with some of them having much greater potential to deliver a satisfactory result. Therefore, a complete exploration of the “problem-solution” space is absolutely essential for maximizing the odds of a project success.

GTI has specific Problem Solving Tools and Techniques to ensure robust performance, among them:

  • Problematic Situation Questionnaire (to explore the initial situation)
  • RelEvent™ Diagram (to model the situation and identify the problems comprising the situation)
  • 11 Rules for Problem Formulations
  • Rules for Problem Selection (to identify the most critical for success problems)
  • Primary Logic of Problem Solving
  • Conflict Separation Principles (to resolve the conflicts between system parameters)
  • Problem-Solution Templates™ (to make the problem solving process more efficient)
  • Etc.

Major Benefits

GTI Problem Solving methodology delivers the following major benefits

  • Effectiveness of the solution, due to selection of the most potent problems
  • Multiple solution alternatives, as the “problem-solution” space is comprehensively explored
  • Efficiency of the process, as the methodology is robust and repeatable
  • Etc.

To address this challenge, the Institute of Professional Innovators offers:

  • Training in the form of a seminar (when you study the how-to of the methodology, including the processes and tools), or a workshop (when you solve your challenge while studying the methodology)
  • Consulting (we solve your challenge, which requires the minimal amount of your involvement in the process)
